Whether youre 22 and starting your first job or 65 and ready to leave it, everyones concerned about how they send emails.Thats what Fundera foundwhen it surveyed 1,000 Americans across generations about their work email usage. It turns out, according to the survey, that were willing to grant some leniency to certain situations. But here are the critical mistakes Fundera found that we wont forgive in emailsMemes make you untrustworthyAs a millennial who identifies as a GIF-emoting bot, I was surprised to learn that so many of my fellow millennials penalize the use of memes. As more modern workplaces turn to instant messaging platforms like Slack, t he rules around work language are stretching to include GIFs and informal punctuation.But according to this survey, the majority of U.S. workers are still sensitive to having our jk jk (thats just kidding for non-millennials) misunderstood. Employees who used memes in workplace communications were seen as less professional, less trustworthy, less serious, and less intelligent by respondents. On a five-point scale, where 1 was very inappropriate and 5 was model-behavior appropriate, emojis and acronyms ranked 2.1 and memes ranked 1.9. All-caps emails were seen as the fruchtwein unforgivable, inappropriate mistake by respondents.But even if you cant LOL now, you can later in your career. Fundera found that we will loosen up about our work communication as we rise through the ranks. Participants who worked in upper management were the most likely group to include all the no-nos of acronyms, emojis, memes, and all-caps emails, and they were the group least likely to find this informal l anguage inappropriate.Lesson learned. When youre the boss, you set the tone in corporate emails and can send all the all-caps, LOL JKs that you wish.No heart-eyes emojisA smiley-face emoji was found to be largely acceptable by respondents. Heart-eyes, less so. Emojis with hearts, like the kissy-face and the heart-shaped eyes, were seen to be the least appropriate emojis by respondents. We are apparently willing to show praise, but not intense emotions like love and affection, in a corporate setting.Of course, emoji policing varied from industry to industry. Participants in the arts and entertainment fields were the most free with their emoji use in emails, while participants in government, public administration, and telecommunications jobs were the most restrictive with their emoji usage.Above all We will forgive wrong dateianhangs, but not typosOne more reason to double check before you hit send Minor mistakes add up. Sending out an email with misspellings was seen as less acceptab le than sending one with a wrong attachment, according to participants. According to Fundera, more than 1 in 5 people said it was not at all acceptable to send out emails with typos. Cognitive psychologists have found that may be because we see grammar errors as a sign of a persons conscientiousness, intelligence, and trustworthiness.At least, you can pass off a wrong attachment as a technical error. How can I still be impressive in my new position, without having to work crazy hours like they did?Signed,Unwilling to Be a WorkaholicDear Unwilling to Be a Workaholic,Before you spend too much time worrying about unrealistic expectations in regards to the person who came before you, get aligned with your new boss about the goals of your role and your responsibilities. You need to ensure that you understand what is expected of you and that your manager knows what youre doing during the ramp up period.I recommend the following when starting any new job1. Form a PlanMake a 30-60-90 day plan with your supervisor during your first week. Writing this down makes it nearly impossible to be misaligned on what is expected of you. The purpose of this plan is to outline the goals you need to hit at your 30-day m ark, 60-day mark, and 90-day mark respectively. The first 30 days is about learning, the next 30 days is about starting to contribute, and the final 30 days is about meeting expectations of the role. I recommend thinking about these milestones in terms of people (who do you deliver results to and work with?), process (how do you do your job?) and product (in what ways do you impact the product/customer?). 2. Find Your Quick WinsOnce youve nailed down your 30-60-90 day plan, its time to figure out what your quick wins will be. What are the biggest pain points (but also lowest-hanging fruit) that you can address successfully and quickly to prove yourself? Make sure those are delivered well and with as much as exposure as possible. This is your first impression. This is when people will go to your manager and say that you really know what youre doing.3. Create a One-on-One TemplateEstablish a one-on-one template that you can use during your regular check-ins with your boss (and if you dont have those set up- heres how to go about that). The point of this is to write down what youve been working on, whats next on your to-do list, and what challenges youve been running into so that you can drive your time with your manager and ensure that they know what youre working on. It also helps you get what you need out of the conversation. For example, if you need coaching time to work through an issue, you can leave space for that. I personally like to send this to my manager the night before our meeting so that he has time to read it ahead of time. Beyond acing your ramp up period in your new job, doing the above things will set you up for a successful relationship with your new boss. You will have established trust early on and proven that you bring results and hit goals- no matter how many hours you sit at that desk.
